How this is calculated
feet = cm ÷ 30.48 (exact — 1 ft = 30.48 cm)
The height-conversation direction: 175 cm is 5.74 ft — but nobody says that, so the result also splits into 5 ft 8.9 in. 180 cm is 5 ft 10.9 in, 190 cm is 6 ft 2.8 in. One foot is exactly 30.48 cm, twelve times the exact inch.
Exact division by definition. The decimal-feet form exists for construction and surveying; the feet-and-inches split is for people — this page shows both because the two audiences ask the same question differently.
Centimetres to feet is overwhelmingly a height conversion — a metric measurement being described to an audience that thinks in feet and inches. The answer is wanted as feet and inches, not decimal feet: 180 cm is 5.91 feet, which is 5 feet 10.9 inches, and reporting "5.9 feet" invites it to be read as five feet nine.
The common anchors are worth memorising if you convert often: 152 cm is 5'0", 165 cm is 5'5", 178 cm is 5'10", and 183 cm is 6'0". Those four cover most of the range people actually ask about, and interpolating between them is accurate to a centimetre.
