The third Sunday in June covers the US, UK, Canada, South Africa and much of the Commonwealth, but the exceptions are substantial. Much of Catholic Europe and Latin America uses 19 March, the feast of Saint Joseph. Australia and New Zealand use the first Sunday in September, being in spring. Germany attaches it to Ascension Day, a Thursday, with an associated tradition of long walks and beer.

The American holiday took decades longer than Mother's Day to establish itself. Sonora Smart Dodd campaigned from 1910, but it was not made permanent by federal proclamation until 1972 — sixty years after its counterpart — having repeatedly been resisted as a commercial invention and, by some accounts, as sentimentally awkward.
