Days Until Friday

The most-asked countdown question of them all. This page counts to the next Friday — midnight at the start of it, in your time zone — and when Friday arrives it says so instead of skipping ahead to next week.

For the precise-minded: the count rolls over at midnight, so on Thursday evening it reads "1 day" until the stroke of twelve, at which point it becomes Friday and the panel celebrates accordingly. The hours-and-minutes line below the big number is for the true clock-watchers.

The weekly cycle is the only common unit of time with no astronomical basis. Days, months and years all track the earth, moon and sun; the seven-day week does not track anything, and its persistence across cultures is a matter of history rather than physics. It reaches modern calendars through Babylonian astronomy and Jewish practice, and the day names in Romance languages still carry the planets while Germanic ones carry Norse gods — Friday from Frigg, vendredi from Venus.

Attempts to replace it have all failed. The French Republican calendar tried ten-day weeks from 1793 and lasted twelve years; the Soviet Union tried five- and six-day cycles between 1929 and 1940 specifically to keep factories running continuously, and abandoned both. The seven-day week survived because coordination is worth more than optimisation.

The modern Friday feeling is measurable rather than folkloric: self-reported mood rises through the week and peaks on Friday, and the effect appears in enough datasets to be taken seriously. Not everyone shares the weekend, though — much of the Middle East runs a Friday–Saturday weekend, and shift workers experience none of the pattern.
