How this is calculated

needed = (target − current × (1 − F)) ÷ F   where F = final's share of the course

Worked example (the defaults): assessments of 72, 85, and 68, equally weighted, give a current average of 75%. With the final worth 40% and a target of 70%: (70 − 75 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 62.5% needed. A comfortable ask from a 75% average — which is exactly the kind of reassurance (or warning) this page exists to give you before study week.

Reading the verdict honestly

Under 50% needed: you're cruising — don't get complacent. 50–85%: normal studying territory. 85–100%: everything must go right; start early. Over 100%: the target is out of reach on marks alone — look at supplementary work, re-weighting policies, or a realistic target instead. The math is blunt so your plan doesn't have to be a surprise.

Frequently asked questions

How is my current grade calculated?

As a weighted average: each assessment's score × its weight, summed, divided by the total weight entered so far — the same math your syllabus uses. Rows you leave empty are ignored, and weights don't need to add to 100.

How does "what do I need on the final" work?

If the final is worth F% of the course, the rest of your work is worth (100−F)%. Needed = (target − current average × (1−F)) ÷ F. Example: 75% average, final worth 40%, target 70% → (70 − 75×0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 62.5%.

What if the answer is over 100% or negative?

Over 100% means the target is mathematically out of reach with this final weight — time to talk to the professor or adjust the target. Negative means you've already secured the target: even 0% on the final keeps you there (check attendance rules before celebrating).

Does this work for university and school grading alike?

Yes — the weighted math is universal. What varies is the pass mark and symbol bands (50% pass in South Africa and much of Europe; 60–70% thresholds common in the US). Enter your own target and the math adapts.
